CANDLE Provides Alcohol Prevention Resources for Parents in Orangetown

    Alcohol Prevention Resources

Alcohol use by persons under age 21 years remains the most serious substance abuse issue in New York State, is currently higher than the national average and is a major public health problem.

CANDLE is the recipient of a EUDL (Enforce Underage Drinking Laws) grant from OASAS (NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services). Through the collobrative efforts of CANDLE, Pearl River High School, Tappan Zee High School and the Orangetown Police Department, a variety of strategies have been implemented to reduce underage drinking in our community.  Some of those strategies have included: inviting all retail alcohol vendors to voluntarily ask for 2 forms of identification for anyone 30 years old and under purchasing alcohol, sponsoring a NYS DMV training on how to identify fake IDs  for all vendors, reduce the sale and consumption of alcohol by underage consumers through increased police compliance checks of retail stores and party patrols and provide awareness and  educational activities on the risks of underage drinking.

Parents do have an influence on their child's values and decisions. Below are resources and information to help keep the converstation going.
